SCHOOL OF MARXISM，BEIJING JIAOTONG UNIVERSITY
There has been a glorious tradition of attaching importance to the teaching and research of Marxist theories in Beijing Jiaotong University. The Marxist political theory courses were set up in February, 1949. And a teaching committee of political theory courses was founded in November of the same year as well. The Teaching and Research Section of Marxism-Leninism was built up in 1952, which began to be under the direct leadership of the university in 1964.
After the reform and opening up, the university decided in January 1979 that political theory section should be under the leadership of the university directly. The Section of Humanities and Social Sciences was established in July, 1985; the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences was established in August, 1987; and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences was established in 1998. In May, 2009, the Party Committee of Beijing Jiaotong University decided that the Teaching and Research Department of Marxist theory, which was affiliated with the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, should be the second-level institution focusing on the teaching and research of ideological and political theories under the direct leadership of the university. In 2012, the school of Humanities and Social Sciences was renamed as the School of Marxism.
There are 55 faculty members in the School of Marxism, including 35 senior titles,11 full professors, 24 associate professors 16 lecturers,7 doctoral supervisors and 27 master supervisors. There is one leading talent in philosophy and Social Sciences under the National Ten Thousand People's Plan, one talent in ‘four batches’ of the national propaganda and cultural system, one chief expert in Research and Construction Project of Central Marxist Theory, a member of the Education Ministry’s Teaching Steering Committee for Colleges’ Marxist Theory Discipline, two members of the Education Ministry’s Teaching Steering Committee for Ideological and Political Theory Courses, one expert member of the State Coursebook Committee, one review expert of the State Social Science Foundation, three State Council special allowance experts, one of the influential figures of the ideological and political theory courses in universities, two of the most distinguished professors and one of the most distinguished teachers in Beijing, one talent of the ‘four batches’ in Beijing, and one outstanding individual in moral education in Beijing as well.
There are seven teaching and research sections and centers in the School of Marxism, including the Teaching and Research Section of Marxist Principles, the Teaching and Research Section of Marxist Sinicization, the Teaching and Research Section of Ideological and Political Education, the Teaching and Research Section of Modern and Contemporary Chinese History, the Teaching and Research Section of Marxist Development History, the Teaching and Research Section of Postgraduate Public Courses, and the Cultural Quality Education Center. Also, more than ten scientific research institutions have been set up, including Beijing Jiaotong University Research Base for Beijing Xi Jinping New Era Socialist Thought with Chinese Characteristics, the Ideological and Political Education Research Base of Capital University Students, the Research Institute of Chinese Marxism and Cultural Development, the Research Center of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, the Research Center of Core Socialist Values, the Research Institute of Marxist Philosophy, and the National Academy of Cultural Soft Power.
There are doctoral degree grants with the first-class disciplines in Marxist theory and postdoctoral programs for Marxist theory in the School of Marxism. And there are also doctoral degree grants with four second-class disciplines, including the basic principles of Marxism, the Sinicization of Marxism, ideological and political education, and the history of Marxist development; There is a master degree grants with the first-class disciplines in Marxist theories and six master degree grants with second-class disciplines, including philosophy, philosophy of science and technology etc. The School of Marxism has become one of the few prestigious universities with the first-class discipline of Marxist theories and the postdoctoral program in national science and engineering oriented universities.
The School of Marxism undertakes the teaching tasks of Ideological and Political Theory Courses and the Situation and Policy Course for all undergraduate students of the university, the teaching tasks of master and doctor students’ Public Courses, and the major courses for master and doctor students in Marxist Theory and Marxist Philosophy Major. At the same time, it also undertakes the teaching tasks of dozens of literary, historical and philosophical courses for all the undergraduates. In recent years, the School of Marxism has implemented the comprehensive ‘three-wheel drive’ (subject-drive, research-drive, teaching-drive) reform measures in the teaching of Ideological and political theory courses, which has achieved remarkable results. Its practices and experiences have been selected into the National Ideological and Political Theory Teaching and Research Team Supporting Plan of the Education Ministry, and have been selected as one of the first Teaching Reform Demonstration Bases for ideological and political theory courses in Beijing.
The School of Marxism has always attached great importance to scientific research. Teachers of the school have presided or participated in nearly 100 research projects such as National Social Science Foundation Projects, Humanities and Social Sciences Projects of the Education Ministry, and Beijing Social Sciences Fund Projects etc. More than 40 monographs and coursebooks have been published and more than 650 high-level academic papers have been published. Meanwhile, the School has also been putting high emphasis on the application research and think-tank construction. Some research results, such as the consulting reports titled ‘the Construction of Socialist Core Values Should Be Bound up with the Masses’, ‘the New Expectations of the Grass-root People for a Better Life in the New Era’ , have received important instructions from the State and Party leaders.
